Hornblende Gabbro Sill Complex at Onion Valley, California, and a Mixing Origin for the Sierra Nevada Batholith

چکیده
The steep crest of the Sierra Nevada, Califor-nia, near Onion Valley, exposes natural cross sections through a mafic intrusive complex that formed as part of the Mesozoic Sierra Nevada batholith. Sheeted sills of hornblende gabbro to hornblende diorite, individually as thick as 1.5 m, form the upper 200 to 300 m of the complex. Thicker, multiply-injected sills, as well as mafic stocks, lie underneath at elevations below 3600 m. Lens-shaped cumulate bodies, as thick as 200 m and more than 700 m broad, lie near the base of the sheeted sill suite. Cumulates are flat-lying, modally layered hornblende gabbro with subsidiary ultramafic olivine hornblendite, plagioclase hornblendite, and late-mobile hornblende-plagioclase pegmatite. Fine grain size, scarce phe-nocrysts and xenocrysts, and quench mineral textures are evidence that hornblende gabbro sills injected in a largely liquid state and preserve basaltic melt compositions. Most sills reached volatile saturation, as shown by tiny miarolitic cavities that are also widespread in cumulates. Although some sills chilled directly against others, most chilled against septa, millimeters to a few centimeters thick, of medium-grained diorite to granodiorite. Mutually crosscutting relations, as well as chilling, show that the septa were partly molten at the time the sills injected and likely formed the lower portions of an overlying more silicic magma chamber that has since been removed by erosion. Sill compositions range from evolved high-alu-mina basalt to aluminous andesite with major and trace element abundances similar to those of modern arc mag-mas. Experimental phase equilibria indicate dissolved water contents near 6 wt% (Sisson and Grove 1993a).

Chronology of pluton emplacement and regional deformation in the southern Sierra Nevada batholith, California
Cretaceous plutonic rocks of the southern Sierra Nevada batholith between latitudes 35.5°N and 36°N lie in a strategic position that physically links shallow, subvolcanic levels of the batholith to lower-crustal (~35 km deep) batholithic rocks. This region preserves an oblique crustal section through the southern Sierra Nevada batholith. Prior studies have produced large U/Pb zircon data sets f...

We present evidence for a thick ( 100 km) sequence of cogenetic rocks which make up the root of the Sierra Nevada batholith of California. The Sierran magmatism produced tonalitic and granodioritic magmas which reside in the Sierra Nevada upperto midcrust, as well as deep eclogite facies crust/upper mantle ma®c±ultrama®c cumulates. Samples of the ma®c±ultrama®c sequence are preserved as xenolit...
متن کاملThermobarometric constraints on the depth of exposure and conditions of plutonism and metamorphism at deep levels of the Sierra Nevada Batholith, Tehachapi Mountains, California
We present thermodynamic estimates of pressures, temperatures, and volatile activities in vailably deformed, gabbroic to granitic, Cretaceous (115-100 Ma) batholithic and framework rocks of the Tehachapi Mountains, southernmost Sierra Nevada, California. A1 contents of hornblende in granitoids imply igneous emplacement at --8 kbar in the southernmost Tehachapi Mountains, with lower pressures (3...
متن کاملSupracrustal input to magmas in the deep crust of Sierra Nevada batholith: Evidence from high-dO zircon
Oxygen isotope ratios of zircon (Zc) from intrusives exposed in the Tehachapi Mountains, southern California, reveal large inputs of high-dO supracrustal contaminant into gabbroic and tonalitic magmas deep (N30 km) in the Cretaceous Sierra Nevada batholith. High dO(Zc) values (7.8F0.7x) predominate in the deep parts of the batholith, but lower values (6.1F0.9x) occur in shallower parts. This in...
متن کاملTopographic response to mantle lithosphere removal in the southern Sierra Nevada region, California
Geological studies of mantle xenoliths entrained in late Neogene–Quaternary lavas from the southern Sierra Nevada region and regional geophysical studies suggest that the highdensity mantle lithosphere that formed beneath the Sierra Nevada batholith in conjunction with arc magmatism is being convectively removed as a ‘‘drip’’ structure. This structure, as imaged seismically, is roughly cylindri...
